If you find yourself reacting to a game and flinching, not because of something inherently abhorrent about it, but because of a fandom, you are really. Really. Really. Really being dumb. If you react in such a negative way to a game when it is brought up because of a fandom, you need to stop.
It shouldn't matter what you've seen about the game because of the fans. Give the game an honest, unbiased look based on what it is, not what the fans make it seem to be. You'll find you're missing out half the time, or at best you'll go, 'yeah this is ok'.
Now as for Fandoms, well, there isn't much to be said. Fanart can be horrendous to behold, but it can also be very flattering. ...Depending on what it is of course. I find it is an honor to get fanart or even have people consider the idea of drawing it. I'm such a small developer that it feels very personal and touching to see these things. However I would prefer that any fandom of mine actually practiced self control and didn't dishonor the values of my story and characters, but if they do, well, I can't exactly control that. Freedom of expression after all.
However if a fandom is as toxic as some of the ones I've heard about (No Man's Sky death threats, Final Fantasy death threats...) behavior like that in general is something to be concerned about, but as long as the game and its creators do not accept or condone it, you shouldn't let this sort of thing get to you either.
Just please, for pete's sake, just actually try a game based on its own merits and not what other people are doing with it. I'm really tired of the idiotic nonsense.
